How Bad Were the Storms?

I received an email question from a viwer today who asked:

“We have many many cold/cool fronts blow through DFW every year and it seems like most of them are no big deal, maybe a little windy with a few t-storms, but that’s all.  Why was the one Thursday morning so violent?

Thanks,
spencer”

A lot depends on just where you were.  For most of north Texas early Thursday morning, there was some lightning and thunder and brief heavy rains, but no damage at all.  I don’t think we lost a twig from a tree at our house.  And I know an online poll of our viewers said that about 40% didn’t even wake up during the storms.

But if you were in the path of the highest wind gusts, or one of the few tornadoes, then your experience was completely different.

This squall line was just like others we see every spring.  The only difference was that some of the strongest wind gusts occurred in highly populated areas.  And that resulted in a lot of damage.
