Will There Be A Winter?

People have been asking me the same question over and over: Is winter ever gonna happen this year?

It’s certainly a fair question. Our cold spells have been brief; ice and snow continue to flirt with, then just miss North Texas.

Today, we got up to 81 degrees at DFW Airport which was three shy of the record for February 3rd. The normal high is 57. Tomorrow’s record high is 80 degrees and it looks like we will tie, if not break that record.

It is still the first week of February, so I’d be crazy to say winter is over and spring is here. But the fact is, right now, there still looks to be no arctic surge of air over the next week and no major pattern changes coming up.

The long range forecast for North Texas now thru the spring continues to be for above normal temperatures and below normal precipiation, which was the forecast for the entire winter back in the fall. That forecast has proven to be pretty close. For the record, the long-range forecast last year was for an end to the drought, and we know that indeed happened.

As far as precipitation, January saw a total of .27″ of rain. Normally, we should have nearly 2″. January of 2007 had 5.58″. Over the last six months, DFW has recorded 12.69″ of rain while the six months before that saw nearly three times as much: 32.04″.

Enjoy Monday…It should be nice. Then storms Monday night and cooler (but still not too cold) the rest of the week. The coldest night will be Tuesday night when we drop below freezing and the only problem that might pop up again this week: High winds and a high fire danger on Tuesday behind the cold front.

Have a great week,
Steve Mac
