Cold Winter Nights

As Steve pointed out in an earlier blog, 2007 wound up being the 5th wettest and 12th warmest year in our history. But the weather in 2008 is starting out differently.

A strong cold front arrived Monday, around mid-day, with gusty north winds. The temperature dropped to 31 Tuesday morning, to start the new year. And tonight will be one of the coldest nights of the winter.

We didn’t see our first freeze of the winter until December 16th, about three weeks later than usual. And the coldest temperature of December occurred the morning of the 23rd, when it dipped to 24 at DFW Airport.

I expect we will be at least that cold tonight. Early Wednesday morning, the temperature should dip to 24 again at DFW, maybe even 23. But it will be even colder in surrounding counties. I expect to see temperatures in the 16 to 18 degree range in Jack, Wise and Denton counties by daybreak.

But the cold weather won’t stick around long. We should see a quick warm-up by the end of the week, and maybe temperatures above 70 by the weekend!
