8:30 am winter weather update

November 30, 2006 at 1:44 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Morning weather balloon data shows most of the precip for the rest of this morning will be in the form of sleet and freezing rain, with just a little snow mixed in.

At 8:30, the 32 degree/freezing line had moved through all of Denton, Collin, Tarrant and all but extreme SE Dallas County.

Any precipitation falling in these counties, including Fort Worth, Dallas, Frisco, Plano, Denton and McKinney will be sleet or freezing rain. Ground temps are still warm enough to keep most mainline roads and highways from freezing, but ALL untreated bridges and overpasses, and some sidewalks will be slick and hazardous from ice accumulation.

Another area of sleet, freezing rain and light snow will move across Tarrant, Denton, Collin and Dallas Counties between 8:30 and 10am. Accumulations are expected to be minor, but a quick burst of sleet and freezing rain will cause slick bridges and overpasses.

7:30am winter update

November 30, 2006 at 1:10 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

At 7:00 freezing temperatures have moved over all of Collin, Denton and Tarrant Counties. Any precip falling will be frozen, but will also be light.

Dallas County is still above freezing, but temperatures will fall to below 32 by 9am in Dallas
As temperatures slowly fall, any precip with changeover to frozen precip, (freezing rain, sleet or snow).

There are two factors that may keep this from being really a blockbuster event.

The ground temperatures, thanks to our recent warm spell, will keep widespread problems from developing, HOWEVER, bridges and overpasses don’t get the benefit of the warm ground helping keep them warmer than freezing.

Also, any precipitation will be light, of course, even light freezing rain can cause serious icing of bridges and overpasses. With the gusty north winds, any ice accumulating on trees can be blown into power lines, and cause power outages.
