Winter Storm Watch

February 16, 2006 at 11:52 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

For several days now, we have been talking about the possibility that we could see some ice this weekend. Now it looks like that is much more likely to occur. It appears that temperatures will indeed drop below freezing late Friday night into Saturday morning, and again Saturday night into Sunday morning. With rain on the way, it certainly looks like we will be seeing some ice.

It should start out as a light rain, beginning Friday evening. Then the light rain will gradually change to freezing rain as temperatures fall. As a result, the National Weather Service has posted a A Winter Storm Watch for north Texas, which will be in effect from Friday night through much of the weekend. Temperatures will remain within a few degrees of freezing for several days.

At this point, it appears that ice accumulations will be sufficient to glaze most bridges and overpasses in north Texas, making travel hazardous as early as Friday night. Recent high temperatures have warmed the ground enough that initially, the surface roads won’t freeze. But if it gets cold enough, even the surface roads could accumulate some ice by Sunday morning. Watch NBC5 for all the latest information on this developing winter storm.
